Gee. The Truth Hurts Doesn't It?

A non-profit education has cops called on them by Professor Linda Heywood and her African-American history class. And the Black Student Union complains that the posters put up by the non-profit group were insensitive and offensive.

What did the posters say? Nothing but some sad, cold facts. And because these skinhead looking white boys were posting material stating these horrible things it had to be racist, right? Hanging out on a street corner, ganged together?

Talk about your racial profiling.

Black group blasts TFA for 'insensitive' fliers
Teach For America recruiter apologizes

The Black Student Union held a charged meeting last night after members were incensed by a series of recently posted Teach For America fliers that some called "insensitive."

Professor Linda Heywood and her African-American history class first noticed the fliers, which included statistics on minority academic achievement, in the College of Arts of Sciences early yesterday morning. They reported seeing two young, white men who looked like "skinheads" posting the fliers and contacted university officials because they felt threatened and offended.
.
.
.
"By fourth grade, African-American students are, on average, 3 to 4 grade levels behind their Caucasian peers in math and science," one poster reads. Another states: "Less than half of high school students in urban areas graduate, and those who do, often read below basic levels."
.
.
.
"I feel like it was an attack, like, 'Why are you here?'" panelist Shameka Gregory, the CAS junior who was first to speak, said of the posters.
.
.
.
.
.
.
Professor Heywood, who was not at the event, said her students had originally thought the fliers were posted by people hoping to promote racism.

She said she and many of her students were bothered by the fliers because they "put things in students' heads" and that the two young men, who students said they saw put up the fliers, "are attacking [students'] intellectual integrity."

"We're not going to stand for it," Heywood said.

After seeing the two men, Heywood said she called the BU Police Department, The Daily Free Press and President Robert Brown's office, which contacted the Dean of Students Office.

When Heywood was notified last night that the fliers were posted by Teach For America, she said despite the organization's good intentions, the statements made are "insensitive" without a provided context.

"I was surprised that it is done by an organization whose ultimate aim is to improve quality of teaching and quality of information," she said.

"These words . . . can be misinterpreted, even though it has well meaning," Heywood added. "It can definitely be misinterpreted."

UMOJA President Francesca Okolie, a CAS junior in Heywood's history class, said the two students posting the fliers "looked like skinheads." She said it was unusual to see students slouching in the corridor at a time when most students are either going to or coming from class.

Wow! Penington Suspends Atlanta Narc Squad

Heres a copy of the warrant.

And the latest from the chief's press conference.

The confidential informant on whose word Atlanta police raided the house of an 88-year-old woman is now saying he never purchased drugs from her house and was told by police to lie and say he did..
.
.
.
"The informant said he had no knowledge of going into that house and purchasing drugs," Pennington said. "We don't know if he's telling the truth."

Football Officials Pansies After Video Replay Debut

Have been very dissappointed in both collge and professional football officials this season.

Instead of officiating and letting the guy upstairs review the calls, they now swallow their whistles and refuse to officiate. Now, they let any play continue until some one scores or runs out of bounds and then hope for the guy upstairs to set everything right or force the coach to throw his red thong-flag onto the field in protest.

Got NOthing wrong w/ video replay. But the way officials have adapted to it makes me sick.

Case in point. Today's edition of Clean-Old-Fashioned-Hate, Georgia Tech vs. University of Georgia, had a play where the GT QB fumbles. Clearly a fumble. But then a 10 player dogpile forms. Somewhere in there, someone had possession and they were all down. BLOW the whistle and sort out possession.

But no. Today's world in football sees the officials stand there and wait. No whistle. The play is still 'live'. Some guy after 5+ seconds reaches in and pulls the ball out of the pile and runs for a touchdown.

Ridiculous.

This series has seen some questionable calls over the years. The traditon continues it seems.

Ahhhh, Thanksgiving

The time of year where we force our kids to watch the Macy's parade. Why? Because our family made us do it. You've seen one balloon, you've seen em all. Unless it's the kind you won't show to momma.

Time to fire up the PS3 (er... 2). Put in a movie (High School Musical) with the kids. Nap some more.

Bah! Didn't make my kids watch the parade this year.

The Mrs' eye problems have returned. Been going to the hospital daily for the steroid i.v. treatment. Joy!

Atlanta Police Drug Raid Kills 90+ Year Old Woman

In a downtown Atlanta neighborhood a 90+ year old grandmother settles down for the night.

But instead of the usual peaceful, if not drafty evening, her night is ripped asunder when her front door disentigrates. Picking up her pistol, likely kept close because a local 72 year old woman had been raped, she aims and hits three intruders before they kill her.

Who were these rude, masked men?

Why Atlanta's finest.

Undercover narcotics officers served a warrant on this little old lady's house this past Tuesday night. Likely, she's no drug lord, or madam even.

These no-knock (was it?) raids, likely the new thing to protect evidence and officers due to the unannounced visit, is putting innocent Americans and police officers in harm's way. This tough, new tool to stop crime seems to be as effective as firing an automatic weapon from the hip. Acting on sketchy information from an informant, the DA and a Judge push for immediate execution of a warrant. A warrant that gives police the permission, if not the order to, assault a home without warning.

At best, it catches some criminals unaware. At worst, innocents die due to bad information from an informant or even a typographical/clerical error. There is always damage to the property and an ever more increased distrust by the citizenry as they hear about these 'botched' raids. The city *might* pay for the damages, the rest?

Unannounced visitors to my shack are likely to meet a similarly violent welcome, regardless of who they are. At least when police announce themselve, innocent homeowners know how to behave. And the police officers caught in the middle know to be on their guard and what to expect.

Edit:
Dreher, the assistant police chief, said as far as he knew the narcotics officers did "everything by the book. They had a search warrant, they announced themselves and knocked first." He said the incident is still under investigation and "will be for days."

~~~~~~ Update
Heard a noon press conference today. Still way too few details available to really ju8dge what happened. The male that they were looking for wasn't arrested as a result of the raid. Apparently an undercover purchase of drugs was made at the house, presumably not from the 92 year old woman. Wonder if she knew about it. Anyway, she's the one that 'answered' the non-uniformed police who served the warrant. Too bad she's not around to give her side of the story.
Wonder if the person who sold the drugs is a younger family member doing the deed without the knowledge of the elder matriarch.
Going to be interesting to see all the details of the case and where this all goes.
The good news? The three wounded policemen will survive their injuries.
~~~~~~~~~~ watching taped wsbtv.com
Taped video from the press conference the search warrant was indeed a no-knock warrant. The DA says that they did knock. Was it with the battering ram or was it a knock and "please open up ma'am?"

The assaulted residence had a burglar door on the outside and a standard front door inside of that. The police forced open the burglar door - likely took some time - and then opened the second door. Bet it was quite a commotion. No wonder grandma got her gun.

The old woman hit the police officers five times when she fired on her suspected assailants. They were likely bottled up in the doorway and made easy targets.

~~~~~~~~~~~~
What I envision happened, is that police showed up to her door, and simultaneously announced and knocked, then began tearing their way through the burglar door and the normal exterior front door. I don't doubt that a 92 year old woman would have difficulty in hearing the police trying to announce themselves. Given the ruckus caused by the police breaking into the house, I bet she felt she was under attack and chose to defend herself.
I really don't like how this went down. Real glad that three police officers will live. We're on closer terms to the police than most Americans, but I don't think their show of force was necessary in this case. May have been 'warranted', but unnecessary I think.
School These Days. Well, Back Then...
The Mrs. had a teacher who wouldn't let you chew gum. Students who arrived to lecture would have to exchange their gum in a jar already quite full of gum with another piece.
I had a PE teacher that wouldn't let you spit. If you did, he'd make you pick it up and put it back.
Had a HS coach who wouldn't let us drink water at practice. We had chipped ice instead. A buddy of mine had a football coach that would only let you get a mouthful of water, so players would scoop water up with their helmets and then consume the fould swill away from the 'spigot'.
And in college, the Mrs. had a professor who wouldn't allow coffee in lecture. Thought it was disrespectful. Of course, so is falling asleep in class right? Choose your poison, right?
Iraq 'Lite'
Geez. Remember the old Carlin routine? Used to be a soldier got shell shock. Now we have Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome.
Democrats talking about Iraq this week don't want to "cut and run," but they'll not "stay the course" either.
Sounds like they'll get their Vietnam after all.
It's not a defeat. It's a nostalgic victory. Kumbayah!
White Atlanta Politicians Want to Kill Blacks and Deny Civil Rights
Atlanta Mayor Shirley Franklin Stoops to New Lows in Fulton County Commission race.
She participated in a hitpiece along with Andrew Young and John Lewis on Lee Morris. Imagine the controversy had a white candidates said this about a black democrat. This is just morally reprehensible and disgusting. I've met the Morris' and there's no danger of them starting a negro holocaust nor turn back the civil rights clock. Gotta "love" the hyperbole of racial politics.
"This is Congressman John Lewis."
"And I'm Mayor Shirley Franklin"
"And I'm Andy Young"
(John Lewis) "On November 7th we face the most dangerous situation we ever have. If you think fighting off dogs and water hoses in the sixties was bad, imagine if we sit idly by and let the right-wing Republicans take control of the Fulton County Commission."
(Shirley Franklin) "The efforts of Martin and Coretta King, hose Williams, Maynard Jackson and many others will be lost. That's why we must stand up and we must turn out the vote for the Democrats on Election Day."
(Andy Young) "And especially for John Eaves for Fulton County Commission Chairman. Unless you want them to turn back the clock on equal rights and human rights and economic opportunity for all of us, vote for John Eaves as Fulton County Chairman"
(Lewis) "Your very life may depend on it."
(John Eaves) "This message paid for by the committee to elect John Eaves."
It's this kind of garbage that reaffirms my complete contempt for the Democratic party in general.
The real bad news?
The Republicans aren't much better.
